According to Anthony P. Postiglione Jr if you are planning a trip to Central America, you have to include Honduras on your itinerary. Honduras is relatively untapped by tourist routes. Although its pristine beaches and the ancient Mayan city of Copan rival Mexico, tourism in Honduras and the country is still developing as a tourist destination, and great care should be taken to stray away from the main tourist destinations.
Honduras doesn’t have many cities to visit, so many people head to the Bay of Islands from La Ceiba, the country’s third largest city. Besides being the gateway to the islands, you can also go rafting on the Kangrihar River. This country has some of the best scuba diving in the world and the coffee region is amazing. Anthony P. Postiglione Jr says there is a plethora of stuff to do and it is one of the cheapest countries in Central America. For a touch of luxury, La Ceiba has chic waterfront hotels.
Offshore, enjoy a cultural experience with the Garifuna people who live in the traditional village of Cayos Cotinos, teach them about the culture of the indigenous people, and watch the Dugu he dance, one of Honduras’ traditional attractions. Honduran cuisine leans heavily on fish, bean, soups, rice and coconut. Generally you can expect a mix of Spanish, Lenca and Caribbean influences.
After visiting Honduras Anthony P Postiglione Jr says there are some things you should be attentive towards while visiting Honduras;
- Drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and street gang activity is prevalent in Honduras. The country has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Be cautious when dealing with strangers or recent acquaintances and be extremely careful when accepting rides or invitations.
- Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and avoid walking or traveling alone after dark. Foreigners have been assaulted on beaches in the Bay Island so whenever possible, walk in groups because attacks on tourists walking alone have occurred.
- Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching occur and credit card skimming is also a concern. To ensure that your belongings, passports and other travel documents are secure at all times, carry photocopies of your travel documents and leave the originals in a secure hotel safe.
- Pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others and check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements.
